A Koopa's Revenge 2 Beta v0.92 & Music

Posted by Lambtaco - June 10th, 2014

Version 0.92 has arrived.

Link to Beta

Changes include three new songs, reduced lag again (though I'm not done with that yet), clearer representation for falling beams, ? blocks won't produce items twice in the same playthrough of a level, and icicles for 4-4. Plus bug fixes and other small changes I didn;t bother to remember or write down.

This will be the last beta before what I'm going to call gamma testing. At which point the game will be 100% done content-wise, but will still need adjustments. You can still ask to be a beta tester by telling me why you want to be a tester. After the next beta is released I'll be asking all beta and gamma testers to fill out a survey, which should help those who aren't sure what sort of feedback to give.

In the next iteration, expect to see the secret ending boss. Which is the last big piece of content I need to add.

I'm still looking to replace and add new music tracks, which will need to be done before the game gets a full release. It would be great if people could offer suggestions from the Audio Portal. But I warn you, I'm picky.

Here is a list of things I need songs for:

  • Main Menu - Plays on the menu, aswell as during the credits. Not entirely sure what I want for this one, but I figure I'll know it when I hear it.
  • Map Day - I need a short loop to play on the map during the day time. no longer han 30 seconds, and it needs to start up fast.
  • Underground Day - Something that says underground, but not too dark or too silly. Like a Mario game would have.
  • First Castle - A theme to play in the first castle. It's a standard Mario game castle. I need something that sounds like that.
  • Ghosthouse Day/Night - Again, something like you'd hear in a Mario game, but for the ghost house this time. I have a really good theme already, and depending on whether a second theme is dark or more lighthearted it could become day or night.
  • Boss Fight - For all but the final boss fights. Short and to the point. I haven't found anything I really like yet. Perhaps I need to branch out more.

For all of these I need songs without too much buildup. I'm also trying to avoid chiptunes. And for Day/Night themes you can listen to the opposite to get a better idea of what I need. I'm even open to replacing existing songs I do like if something better comes along. Soundtrack listed here.

WOOOOO, this is gonna be awesome, heard the new songs and all fit perfectly, now to start the game.

Kick it's ass!

AWESOME, everything is fitting perfectly every single thing even the music. I like the new names for some levels that had placeholder names, Like all the water levels and the Pyramid (now called the Forsaken Pyramid).

You troll! When I got to the final confrontation I had to die 'cause there was no boss, haha.

I already had a completed save file so I didn't have to start the game again, but I used another empty save file just to see the new things.

5 bugs: There is this random pipe you can go into in the pyramid level and all it does is move you to another pipe which is basically right next to it, this is right before you have to jump on the huge mummy toadlet to get across the spikes.

In the first water level, when doing the secret at the beginning to get to the end of the level, you can over jump the arrow made of coins (moving to the left) and fall out the world and die, in other words, there is no border to prevent you from falling.

In Falling Waters, when saving the koopling, to the left of where the koopling was you can climb the wall even though the area where you get the koopling is filled with air.

If you are climbing and jumping a vine to get up it faster, like what people would do to get up vines faster in Super Mario World, you can go above the vines and you wouldn't get to the place the vine would take you, what you would have to do is climb down the vine and then climb up it again THEN it would take you to that destination.

When transitioning from the koopling area in Thunder Woods to the snowy area to get the secret exit in that level, there is no music when getting to the snowy area.

This game is awesome, the work put into this game boggles my mind, no wonder it took many years to make this. I just hope that none of the beta testers who have a youtube channel immediately show ever secret when the game comes out.

Thanks, as always.

I said there wasn't anything there yet. That's what you get for not reading the manual.

1. Not a bug. I put that in there to be annoying :p

2. That's a really weird one. I'll have to fix it, asap.

3. I see. Simple oversight. Will fix.

4. Works okay for me. As long as you press the up key you get to where you're going. I tested it on 2-1. did you use a different level?

5. Damn. Must have broken that when I fixed that other thing.

Don't give them any ideas. And thanks for all the bug finds. The game's too big for me to catch them all on my own.

So, when are you going to release this game?? You began this project in 2006, did ya?

Technically, I started in 2007. But I scrapped that and started over in I think 2009. I'm aiming for an August 1st release, but I'm not making any concrete plans until the game is actually finished.

Thank you very much for adding me! I promise to do my very best!

You're welcome.

Going great so far.
The only problem I have right now is this lag that gets more annoying in water and lava levels, though not sure if it's the game or my laptop (most likely the latter though).
Anyway, it's really fun and awesome!

Some levels are laggier than others. I think some of the impression of lag in water levels is caused by slower movement of the levels in general, though they do lag a fair bit. I've still got work to do in making the game more efficient. If the lag becomes unbearable, try closing other tabs or programs, or turning off the weather effects or backgrounds from the pause menu.
Glad you're enjoying it.

Also, sometimes I don't lose a life when I die on a level, though I think this mostly happens with Koopa.

That's weird. Have you noticed any pattern at all? Or just any levels it happens on or ways you die when this happens?

Actually, the not losing a life thing was my fault. I thought the life meter depleted when you get back to the map after dying instead of it going down as soon you die in a level. The lag has also been decreasing greatly, so it was most likely my laptop's fault.

Well, mystery solved.

Edited to remove Snow Day from the needed songs list. I found one the other day.

Sorry for being away for a while; I had Uni finals for year 1 to do, and lately I've been busy with family and real life in general. I'll try and check in more often from now on.

The game is really good at the moment. I'll be stunned if it isn't the highest scorer in the month it is submitted in. It looks really polished and cool at the moment. Besides the secret boss I assume it is just tweaks and such from here on in?

The credits look really good; the scribble style of the characters is really cool. Will I get a mention for giving you the idea for the Pipemo?

Also, I have a suggestion. In the scene after the final boss where Mario is limping away only to get blocked by the Kooplaings, maybe you could add his 'ooowaaa' scream he makes when he falls down a pit in modern games? Could be a nice touch and it'd work with how scared he looks.

I'll try and search for music in the coming days. What genre do you want the main menu theme to be? Specifics would help me find a good one.

'Sokay. Meat life always takes precedence.

Pretty much tweaks, and a few things I left unfinished. Such as a the soundtrack, and it's a nightmare, let me tell you. The day/night gimmick really makes it hard to get songs that work. I actually had my tweak list down to two items, but now it's back up in the 20s.

You won't get a mention for pipemo in particular, but you will be getting a prominent credit.

I've actually always intended to do that. I'm going to make all the sound effects with my mouth to go with the hand-drawn style. My edit them a bit digitally, as some could impact the gravitas of the moment.

The trouble is, I'm not sure. It needs to be sort of a theme song, I guess. I want the same song to play during the credits. This is one song that can break my rule of needing songs to jump in without too much build up.

I'm also loooking for a finalest boss song. I was going to reuse one from the final bosses, but they don't fit. Maybe after it's out somebody can come up with a good one.

Sorry I haven't posted, i've been meaning to get back to you, but for some reason newgrounds isn't working for me I can't get into the beta, I can't hear any songs, etc. Hopefully this can be fixed, but for the time being, I can't test or give feedback. :(

Somehow missed this post, sorry. That's very weird. Hope it starts working for you again soon.

Hi.
I'm not doing very much, you can fire me from the project if you want to. But anyway...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BVxLtUa_84 - Possible boss music?
The game is awesome btw...

I won't remove anyone who's given any useful feedback, so you're safely still in. and you'll receive a tester credit.
I like the music, but I can only use music from the newgrounds audio portal.
Thanks.
